IKEA x Marimekko - The BASTUA Collection – Launching This March

It is possible that you have already heard the news – the collaboration between furniture giant IKEA has joined forces with the Finnish design house Marimekko to create a new collection named “BASTUA”.

Launching this March, the BASTUA limited-edition collection comprises of 26 vibrantly printed products, encompassing furniture and glassware. However, the range's standout pieces are the sauna-inspired products, intended for modern bathroom spaces. Notably, the collection's name, "BASTUA," is derived from the Southern Swedish term for "sauna." The collaboration is meant to inspire quiet moments in the everyday.

The question is, what unities two renowned Nordic brands and what can they offer to the masses? While Nordic design is typically admired for its simplicity and functionality, often incorporating materials reminiscent of the natural surroundings that characterize the region's thinly populated territories, it also embodies joy and playfulness.

The BASTUA collection showcases a wonderful range of striking patterns that reflect the beauty of nature and the sauna environment. Interestingly, this marks the first time that Marimekko has designed a set of prints exclusively for a brand collaboration.

I personally am a fan of Marimekko, the brand mission is to spread happiness and joy in people's everyday lives through the use of bold prints and colors. One of the key highlights of the collection is the print inspired by the large decorative rhubarb leaves found growing near sauna buildings in Finland, which is featured on several items, including the iconic FRAKTA bag.

This delightful collection has something for everyone, from the vibrantly printed furniture to the glassware and textiles. For those who love a traditional sauna experience, there are robes, towels, and even a first-ever sauna bucket! Other items, like a cushiony soft seat and a light meal, are designed to help you feel more grounded before or after your sauna ritual. Plus, there are ways to create a calm atmosphere, like lighting the BASTUA candle that's infused with lovely aromas of elderflower, rhubarb, and sweet vanilla. It's the perfect touch to help you unwind and relax after a long day.

When asked, “What do you hope for the collection to inspires?” Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko responded: “I really hope it all inspires people to set up that “sauna moment” even if you don’t have access to a sauna. To stop for a minute and sit back for a timeout to reflect and take care of yourself, your friends, or your family”.
