Michelle’s Gift Guide for the Design-Minded (2023 Edition)

Some people find holiday shopping a chore, but not me. This time of year, I love the opportunity to present someone I care about with an item I picked out just for them.

I rely on some of the same skills for gift shopping as when I’m designing for a client–I listen to their wants and needs, take note of what brings them joy, and pay attention to their dislikes.

I also approach either task with the same belief that everyone deserves beautiful form and practical function in their homes and lives. The best designs, and the best gifts, incorporate both.

Here I’ve assembled a collection of gifts that caught my eye for a range of recipients, whether you are shopping for a homebody or frequent flier. Most are available online, but if you prefer to pick out gifts in person, I also wrap up the guide with a handful of recommendations for in-person shopping in New York.

I hope these suggestions help you find the gifts you're looking for, and wish you and yours a happy holiday season!

For the one who loves luxury:

  1. Red Roses Scent Diffuser from Jo Malone London - I love this particular diffuser for its longevity and strength, but also for its specific, sophisticated scent. (Growing up, my mom always used rose-infused essential oils around the house, so this extra-pleasant aroma takes me back.)

  2. Mohair Blanket Rolled Fringe from Stackelbergs - Another item I find extremely comforting is a mohair blanket. Unbelievably soft, extra warm, and surprisingly durable, it’s a gift that will make anyone feel cared for!

  3. Portable Hashira Table Lamp, Audo - This impeccably designed lamp combines modern conveniences with the beauty of a Japanese paper lantern–buy it for someone who’s a light in your life.

  4. Malt Gift set from NUDE Glass - For those who love the warmth of whiskey, this gorgeous handmade glassware will showcase their favorite pours perfectly. (I’m partial to FEW Rye Whiskey)

  5. Panther Wine Stopper at Artemest - Or, if you’re shopping for a wine connoisseur, consider this unique bottle stopper–it’s got the wow factor.

  6. Panalito Placemat from MINNA - For the loveliest table linens that feel good on multiple levels, I turn to MINNA, a B-Corp sourcing ethically hand-made homewares from Latin America.

  7. Il Bauletto Jewelry Box at Artemest - If last holiday you gave your loved one a special piece of jewelry, I would consider this absolutely beautiful box, which is worthy of what goes inside it.

  8. 18 Macarons Gift Box, Laduree Paris  - When in doubt about what to gift, I always turn to Laduree Macarons. As pretty as they are delicious, it’s the perfect choice for anyone with even the slightest sweet tooth. (Or for someone who seems to have everything else already!) My personal favorite are the raspberry, and I always purchase them in person for maximum freshness.

For the one who is always traveling:

  1. Karst Stone Paper Notebook  - When I travel, I always like to keep a small notebook handy to write down all kinds of observations. I love the look of this one—it’s eco-friendly and waterproof! As a bonus, gift it with your favorite pen. (Mine are these in fun colors.)

  2. Leica SOFORT 2 White - What would a trip be without pictures? I especially enjoy an instant camera to capture the spirit of the moment.

  3. Native Union Universal Belt Cable Duo - USB-C & Lightning Connectors - This surprisingly attractive, extra-long cable will help keep cameras and phones charged at all times.

  4. Nude Vibe Checker MagSafe Battery Power Pack - I find an external phone battery so helpful. This is a cute and practical option for any adventurer who wants to make sure they can connect from anywhere.

  5. Compressible Packing Cubes from Monos - I always use packing cubes to help stay organized while traveling! These ones come in a range of muted colors that will please your style-conscious friend or family member.

  6. Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag from CALPAK - An option available in even more colors, this toiletry organizer will work equally great in a five-star bathroom as when trekking to the hostel shower.

  7. Cadence Beauty Edit - The absolute sleekest way I’ve seen to bring your favorite lotions, cleansers, serums, and gels anywhere in the world. (I would love it if someone gifted me these!)

  8. Khaki Proenza Schouler White Label Large Morris Tote - This stylish, sturdy, and roomy bag caught my eye as another great option for someone who is always on the go.

For the one who is happiest at home:

  1. Beast Blender - One of my favorite items on the list, this blender is ideal for the cook in your life. I know from experience that it makes the best, creamiest sauces and dressings, like this caesar dressing from Samin Nosrat.

  2. Stagg EKG Electric Kettle - A seriously stylish upgrade for any hot-beverage lover, whether they live for their morning coffee or wind down their day with a cup of tea. (Have you heard of Trade Coffee? It’s a great coffee subscription service, your first coffee is on me!)

  3. Supersmart Fridge - For the one who prefers their beverages cold, this sleek model brings all the benefits of a built-in fridge while avoiding the need for renovations. (A win in my book, whether you rent or own!)

  4. Coway Airmega 150 Air Purifier - So that your family can breathe easy this year, I’m sharing the most easy-on-the-eyes air purifier I’ve found yet.

  5. SEASONS Gray Soni 2.0 Diffuser from Ssense - The second diffuser on this list, because I absolutely love to fill the air with a soothing scent. Plus I really enjoy this aesthetic!

  6. Lofree Touch PBT Wireless Mouse - Design can be as much about tactile experiences as aesthetics–I love that this funky mouse has both!

  7. XGIMI HORIZON Ultra Projector - A great gift for the one you share movie nights with, this projector is sure to elevate the experience.

  8. Terraflame Stone Fire Bowl TableTop - Perfect for the one who’d rather get cozy under the stars than on the couch, even on the smallest of patios. (I find there is nothing like sitting by the fire on a cold night!)

For your New York shopping experience…

…in Brooklyn.

  • Leif Shop - My personal go-to for gifts, this Williamsburg store has a great range of home goods and affordable art.

  • The Brooklyn Tea Cup - I recently heard about this unique vintage china shop, and can’t wait to visit. The Park Slope studio requires appointments, but promises a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

…in Soho.

  • MOMA Design Store - This store associated with the Museum of Modern Art has all kinds of amazing items, including from Scandinavian HAY Designs (a favorite of mine).

  • Roman and Williams Guild - I always enjoy stopping in this high-end home furnishing store, but it’s especially worth it this time of year, when it’s beautifully decorated.

  • Clic - I’m continually impressed by the highly curated selection of designer and artisan items at this unique home decor store.

…in Hudson.

  • MINNA - If you’re looking to get out of the city before the holidays, head upstate to Hudson and check out one of my top places to shop for ethically sourced, hand-made homegoods. I’m confident you’d find the perfect gift.

Happy Holidays and happy shopping, everyone.

Yours truly,

xo Michelle
